As part of CNA’s Quarterly Update blog series, we are pleased to share with you the latest summary of our achievements and progress as we deliver on our strategic priorities. We also invite you to subscribe to the CNA newsletter by visiting the 'contact us' page for monthly updates, including details of upcoming events and educational resources.

Key milestones for CNA

In May, our Annual General Assembly took place. Alongside voting on our legal and financial obligations, the General Assembly was an opportunity for our member community to reflect and celebrate the successes of 2020. While we looked back at an unprecedented year for mobility and ticketing, it also allowed us to look forward and discuss Calypso’s technical roadmap as it evolves to support ticketing’s role in responding to urban mobility’s post-pandemic challenges.

In April, CNA announced its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the NFC Forum, bringing together two active membership bodies whose goal is to advance and converge NFC services through open standards. The MoU will see us work together to educate the mobility sector on the role of NFC for safe, sustainable and seamless ticketing solutions for the future of mobility. Read our recent blog to learn more about the importance of this collaboration.

In June, CNA members Compagnie des Transports Strasbourgeois (CTS), Strasbourg’s public transport authority, supported by ticketing solution provider Wizway, was the first to roll out an interoperable Android m-ticketing solution using Calypso HCE and Hoplink. Alongside providing Strasbourg’s commuters secure and convenient contactless m-ticketing with their Android smartphone, the open Calypso standard will also facilitate the adoption of Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS), and enable interoperable ticketing in Strasbourg and Paris.

Technical updates

Looking ahead, our focus remains on finalising Eclipse Keyple, the open-source software development kit. We are also developing our certification programme, with a focus on the security of Calypso HCE for m-ticketing, and Calypso Basic for smartcards.

For all the latest developments to our technical documents and specifications, visit the Calypso Technical Support website. This page is a central resource for all CNA members, containing the latest updates to our technical requirements.

Providing education and collaboration

Events provide a vital opportunity to connect and educate the ticketing community, harnessing the power of collaboration to advance contactless ticketing through open standards. Q2 saw an active events programme, including some physical events – a welcome change from the virtual format we have been used to for the past 18 months.

In May, CNA hosted the 6th Budapest Smart Ticketing and Digital Services Forum, which brought together the global ticketing community to discuss the role of digitisation in urban mobility, and we welcomed a guest speaker from the Hungarian Foreign Ministry.

June also saw us exhibit at VivaTech in Paris in partnership with CNA member, ICARE, including a demonstration of its ring payment solution developed using Keyple. We also exhibited virtually for our LATAM community at UITP Latin America Week 2021.

As well as exhibiting, Q2 also saw us take to the podium, share CNA’s message of collaboration with audiences around the world. In June, we spoke on the role of m-ticketing for MaaS at the NFC Open Forum; the importance of open standards for the development of mobility services at the Ville, Rail & Transports conference; and ticketing procurement strategies at the Transport Ticketing and Digital Summit.

Throughout the rest of 2021, we have an active events calendar, which we hope will see the return of physical events, depending on how the public health situation changes. More information on these upcoming opportunities is available on our events page.

Looking forward

The first half of 2021 has been a welcome success. As passengers slowly begin to return, we look forward to an even more fruitful second half for all our members as we continue to champion contactless ticketing based on open standards created by the transport community, for the transport community.
