What are the latest technical enhancements to the Calypso specifications?

Calypso Networks Association, which aims to provide all the tools you need to easily build standardised, future-proof, multimodal ticketing, has announced a series of technical updates to enhance trust, reliability and accessibility.

The Calypso specifications, supported by the open source SDK, Eclipse Keyple, empower public transport stakeholders to master their systems and create more seamless, secure and inclusive mobility solutions, which are based on global technical standards that guarantee interoperability and scalability.

So, what are the latest updates our engineers have made, supported as always by input from the CNA community, which now comprises nearly 120 members across the world. Let’s take a look at what’s new:

Latest technical enhancements: Calypso Card Applet 2.0

The new release of the Calypso Card Applet fully supports the latest Calypso Prime card specification, which is the most advanced and comprehensive range of Calypso card products.

The new additions include:

• The ability to conduct encrypted sessions, to protect confidential card data (a feature of the Prime Extended specification)

• Asymmetrical authentication, which means ticketing terminals no longer require embedded security modules (a feature of Prime PKI)

Eclipse Keyple: middleware enhancement

The latest major development in Keyple’s middleware solution for ticketing terminals is the addition of support for Calypso Prime PKI card functions. This enables a ticketing terminal to authenticate a Calypso card without requiring a security module.

• Keyple is designed to make it easy to add new functionalities to terminals while maintaining compatibility with existing ticketing applications.

• The Keyple open-source project now offers the community a middleware solution for managing all Calypso card transaction features in a ticketing terminal.
